We would like to extend a very warm welcome to all those interested in the ED Pediatric Oncology Scientific Circle!
The circle offers many opportunities for you to become more involved as a student and provides a pleasant, gratifying and educational alternative to studying!
The activities in the circle include:
- The ability to join night duties, to see more interesting cases than you would normally see during school exercises.
- Monthly group meetings, where we will discuss and present specific topics of interest.
- Individual/team research projects.
- Chance to go to conferences throughout Europe
- The ability to meet new people!
- The occasion to interact and bring joy to the children on the ward with games and planned events.
Short History of the Circle

The previous academic year led by Natalia Cwalina, Elin Palmgren, and Marie Low. In the current academic year, the circle is led Marie Low, Melanie Wielicka, and Marlon Souza Luis
For the students…
English Division students arrive in Gdansk, from practically every corner of the world, each individual trying to find their place, their particular niche. There aren’t many outlets to which non-Polish speakers can turn in order to get more experience with patients. However, some have, very fortunately, stumbled upon the Pediatric Oncology Scientific Circle at the Department of Pediatrics, Hematology and Oncology at the Medical University of Gdansk, supervised by Dr hab. Ewa Bien and Dr Malgorzata Krawczyk.
… And for the children
The circle offers a unique opportunity to interact with patients outside of the classroom setting. Though scientific work comprises a big part of our success, it is about far more than that. Through the organization of various events for the children, such as Halloween, Mikolajki (St Nicholas’ Day), and our Fun with English classes, just to name a few, we hope that it is not only a moment for the children to detach from the regular routine at the hospital, but also to learn just a little bit about those strange students in white coats and what they are about.
Fun with English
Weekly classes during which the children are encouraged to hone their English skills in a fun, interactive and creative way! Our students organize several games, arts and crafts, songs, and activities for the children to enjoy. Every class has a new and exciting theme.
The Oncological Student Scientific Conference
The first Oncological Student Scientific Conference held in 2019 had the goal of bringing together like minded individuals and peers in academia. The conference provided a unique opportunity to combine perspectives from both English Division and Polish Division education in medical science with eight eminent universities across Europe. The conference was initiated to encouraged to make such events a normal and easily accessible feature of this university.
Duties
A fantastic chance for students to perfect their physical examination and history taking abilities. During each duty, students are able to visit patients, and after conducting a thorough examination, they are to devise various differential diagnoses, and present the case in a formal way.
Research
The circle is just buzzing with innovative research ideas and enthusiasm for project work! In the short history of the circle, there have been several projects completed, and many active projects ongoing!
